What is Biodiversity?
Biodiversity is the variety of all living things and ecosystems. It includes plants, animals, fungi and micro-organisms as well as the ecosystems where they live. We want to improve our understanding and protection of our local ecosystem which includes: pastoral land, native forest, scrub, wetlands, streams and rivers. This includes understanding the various species that inhabit our waterways, soil, ground and air. By working collaboratively we can ensure the long-term health and resilience of these ecosystems.
NAtive forest & Scrub
Our catchment is home to the largest native forest in the region which serves as a sanctuary for a rich variety of native flora and fauna. This forest provides a habitat for a myriad of native birds, along with a range of plant species, including towering Kahikatea trees and native ferns. Together, these elements contribute to the richness of our catchment that we are committed to preserving and protecting for generations to come.
Rivers & Streams
There are various streams and rivers within our catchment area, which serve as a vital lifeline for the surrounding ecosystems. These waterways provide a habitat for many native plant and animal species making it crucial to preserve these precious resources.
wetlandS
Our wetland is home to a diverse array of plant and animal species, many of which are rare or endangered. The wetland is teeming with life and plays a crucial role in regulating water quality, flood control, and carbon sequestration. We are committed to preserving and protecting the wetlands for future generations.
”The only way forward, if we are going to improve the quality of the environment is to get everybody involved.”
